Lutheran Social Services of Nevada Holds Open Air Markets for Low Income Families, Seniors and Individuals

Farmer’s market style events provide fresh produce, meats and other food items for free

LAS VEGAS – Low-income families, seniors and individuals will be able to “shop” for fresh produce and other food items, all for free, at Lutheran Social Services of Nevada’s (LSSN) Open Air Market, Saturday, Jan. 26, at two Las Vegas locations. Each market is prepared to serve more than 250 households and will feature fresh fruits, vegetables, and more. Each family can receive up to 150 pounds of food, which can be used to create approximately 125 meals per household. The equivalent of 31,250 meals will be given out at LSSN’s two Open Air Markets events.

“Our Open-Air Market events, in conjunction with our community partners, are designed to bring nutritious food items to geographic areas of need,” said Derrick Felder, assistant executive director, LSSN. “We look forward to expanding the program to food deserts across the valley to combat hunger in our community.”

Since its inception in May of 2010 in Mesquite, LSSN’s Open Air Market program has expanded exponentially throughout the Las Vegas Valley. In 2013, LSSN hosted four Open Air Markets annually in their own parking lot. By 2018, 43 markets were held throughout the city in a single year, distributing over 355,000 pounds of food and serving 25,000 individuals throughout the
valley.
