Lutheran Social Services of Nevada Expands Senior Program

Program offers free, nutritious lunches for homeless and low-income seniors

LAS VEGAS – More homeless and low-income seniors will have access to free, healthful lunches with the expansion of Lutheran Social Services of Nevada’s (LSSN) Senior Meal Program thanks to an $80,000 grant from the MGM Resorts Foundation. The hot meals are prepared by the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas. The menu, changed daily, is created by a nutritionist and a chef from the Culinary Academy to provide a balanced, nutritious meal. Meals range from turkey chili with mixed green salad, to baked chicken and veggies. The meals are guided by Nevada’s nutrition standards and must contain a certain amount of protein, three servings of fruits and veggies, and low-fat milk.

“Our Senior Meal Program makes world of difference to seniors who are struggling, and for many seniors, this may be their only meal of the day,” said Armena Mnatsakanyan, executive director, Lutheran Social Services of Nevada. “Seniors also use this as an opportunity to come in from the cold and just relax.”

For some local seniors, the program also offers the opportunity to socialize.

“I come here to make new friends,” says Ruby, a LSSN client who dines regularly at the Holy Spirit location.

The hot meals are served Monday – Friday at two locations: Reformation Lutheran Church, 580 E. St. Louis Ave., 2:00 – 3:15 p.m., and Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 6670 W. Cheyenne Ave., noon – 1 p.m. Seniors 60 and older, their spouses or caregivers, and disabled individual who live in senior housing eat for free. Individuals under 60 can dine for a suggested $5 donation, though no one is turned away for inability to pay. In 2018 the two locations collectively provided meals for 520 unique seniors per month, for a total of 15,313 hot meals served in a year.
