Faith Lutheran Middle School Service Event Largest One Day Middle School Student Volunteer Experience in Nevada

Over 800 local students participate in mass volunteer day at over 24 local nonprofits and schools

LAS VEGAS – The spirit of Thanksgiving will be coming early at local nonprofit organizations, schools and senior centers as 800 middle school students from Faith Lutheran participate in the Faith Lutheran Middle School Service Event, Friday, Nov. 16, 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. Volunteer projects range from packing backpacks and hygiene items for local homeless youth nonprofit Project 150, to dancing and crafting with seniors at the Lied Senior Center, to cleaning stalls and feeding rescue animals at Horses4Heroes to preparing Thanksgiving baskets at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.

Faith Lutheran’s Middle School Service Event teaches students about the importance of giving back to their community and serving others. Students, grades 6-8, break into smaller groups and spend the morning volunteering at several local nonprofits, senior assisted living homes and at-risk elementary schools, while their experience is documented via video by students from Faith Lutheran’s Academy of Film & Broadcast. After the volunteer projects are completed, the students head back to the school for self-reflection and to prepare a recap about their experience to be presented to the entire school at a special chapel service.

“Over 8,000 Faith Lutheran students have participated in the Middle School Service Event during the past 11 years, and each year our students tell us they benefited far more from the experience than the nonprofits and clients they served,” said Sarah Harper, Faith Lutheran’s middle school principal. “This experience helps students develop compassion and a deeper understanding of the world they live in and the true needs and face of poverty right in their own community.”

Media are invited to “shadow” student volunteer efforts.
