LAS VEGAS – While local colleges are holding commencement ceremonies across the Las Vegas Valley this month, five Clark County School District (CCSD) elementary schools will hold a special ceremony for their 5th-grade students graduating from Andson Inc.’s Piggy Bank program. Each week students in the Piggy Bank program deposit money into a savings account with the assistance of Andson’s program staff and volunteers. Students’ deposits are kept by Silver State School Credit Union in master accounts that they, and their families, can set financial goals and track savings. The Piggy Bank program includes a financial literacy curriculum that teaches students valuable skills such as identifying wants versus needs, budgeting and saving. At the end of the fifth-grade students are given the option to converting their Piggy Bank savings into a regular account or withdrawing their total savings in the form of a check.

Andson’s Piggy Bank program currently operates at five CCSD schools – Walter Bracken STEAM Academy, Howard Hollingsworth STEAM Academy, Walter Long STEAM Academy, Laura Dearing Elementary School and C.H. Decker Elementary School – and plan to expand to more schools for the 2018 – 2019 academic school year.

“Our Piggy Bank students have worked so hard to reach their savings goals this year,” said Sonia Anderson, co-founder of Andson, Inc. “Some of the graduating students have participated in Piggy Bank since Kindergarten and have saved over $4,000. We are incredibly inspired by their success.”

The Piggy Bank Program is funded through community partnerships with Silver State Credit Union (SSSCU), Cathay Bank Foundation, NV Energy Foundation, John Ben Snow Memorial Trust, One Nevada Credit Union and Andson fundraising activities.

In addition to operating the Piggy Bank program, Andson offers no-cost after-school homework help and academic tutoring at 15 locations across southern Nevada.
