800 Local Students Volunteer at 22 local Charities for Middle School Service Event

LAS VEGAS, NV – November 4, 2016 – On Friday, Nov. 18, more than 800 students from Faith Lutheran Middle School and High School will volunteer their time for the school’s annual Middle School Service Event, from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. Volunteer projects range from preparing Thanksgiving baskets for Las Vegas Rescue Mission, to painting murals and playing games with local vets at the US Veteran’s Home, to creating crafts with seniors at Nevada Senior Services, to reading with at risk students at local elementary schools, to stocking food at local food pantries.

Every year Faith Lutheran hosts the Middle School Service Event to teach students about the importance of giving back to their community and serving others. Students, grades 6-8, break into smaller groups and spend the morning volunteering at several local nonprofits, senior assisted living homes and at risk elementary schools, while their experience is documented via video by Faith Lutheran seniors. After the volunteer projects are completed, the students head back to the school for self-reflection and to prepare a recap about their experience to be presented to the entire school at a special chapel service.

“Over 7,000 Faith Lutheran students have participated in the Middle School Service Event during the past 10 years, and each year our students tell us they benefited far more from the experience than the nonprofits and clients they served,” said Sarah Harper, Faith Lutheran’s middle school principal. “This experience helps students in developing a deeper understanding of the world they live in and the true needs and face of poverty right in their own community.”

“We are grateful for the help and support provided by the Faith Lutheran students,” said Sydney Knott, founder of local nonprofit Horses4Heroes. “Their volunteer efforts allow us to serve more clients.”
